Mahram derives from the Arabic root ح-ر-م (H-R-M), which carries meanings of sanctity, respect, and prohibition. The name can refer to a person of dignity and honor, or to Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar known for its sacred status. In Islamic jurisprudence, mahram specifically denotes a male relative (such as father, brother, or husband) who is permitted to accompany a woman on the Hajj pilgrimage. The root also encompasses the concept of something forbidden or sacred that must be protected.
