Marya (مريا) is an Arabic transliteration and variant of the name Maria/Mary, which has Hebrew origins from the name Miriam. The name is believed to derive from roots meaning 'of the sea' (mar = sea) or alternatively from a root meaning 'beloved' or 'wished for child.' In Arabic contexts, Marya represents a Hellenized form of the Hebrew Miriam, popularized through Christian and Islamic tradition as the name of the mother of Jesus (Maryam in Arabic). The spelling 'Marya' represents one of several English-language adaptations of this name.
