Qabiyla (قَبِيلة) is derived from the Arabic root ق-ب-ل (Q-B-L), which relates to reception, acceptance, and direction. The name literally means 'tribe' or 'clan'—a social unit comprising families descended from a common ancestor. In classical Arabic, it also refers to a category or type, particularly of plants. The word carries deep cultural significance in Bedouin and Arab society, where tribal identity was fundamental to social organization, protection, and honor.

Qabiyla originates from Classical Arabic and is rooted in the Semitic language family. It represents a fundamental concept in pre-Islamic and Islamic Arab society, reflecting the tribal structure that defined Arab civilization for centuries.
The concept of qabiyla (tribe) was central to Arab identity and social organization for millennia. In Islamic history, the Prophet Muhammad and his followers came from specific tribes, and tribal lineage ('nasab') remained significant in Islamic jurisprudence and inheritance law. The name reflects the importance of collective identity, kinship bonds, and the social hierarchy that characterized Arabian Peninsula societies, making it a name deeply rooted in Arabic cultural heritage.
Different spellings and forms of Qabila across languages
The root Q-B-L appears throughout the Quran in various forms. The word 'qabiyla' (tribe) appears 27 times in the Quran, primarily in the context of describing the tribes of the Arabian Peninsula, the Children of Israel, and other nations. The Quran frequently references specific tribes to illustrate historical lessons and divine guidance. For example, it mentions the tribes of Israel, the tribe of Thamud, and many Arab tribes that rejected the Prophet's message. The concept of tribal affiliation is used to explain social structures and the consequences of rejecting divine messengers.
