Sakinah is deeply rooted in classical Arabic and Islamic tradition, originating from Quranic vocabulary where the concept of sakīnah (tranquility) appears as a divine gift. The name has been used throughout Islamic history as a feminine name reflecting spiritual and emotional virtues valued in Islamic culture.
In Islamic culture, Sakinah represents one of the most spiritually valued feminine qualities—the ability to remain composed, dignified, and serene in all circumstances. The name reflects the Islamic emphasis on inner peace derived from faith and trust in Allah (tawakkul). Historically, it has been borne by notable women in Islamic history, including Sakinah bint al-Husayn, the granddaughter of Prophet Muhammad, whose life exemplified the virtues embedded in her name.

The concept of sakīnah (tranquility/peace) appears throughout the Quran as a divine gift bestowed by Allah upon the believers and messengers. It represents a spiritual state of composure and inner peace that comes from proximity to Allah and unwavering faith. In Surah Al-Baqarah, sakīnah is described as coming with the sacred Ark (Tabut), signifying that true peace accompanies divine guidance. In Surah At-Tawbah and Al-Fath, sakīnah is explicitly sent down into the hearts of believers and the Prophet during times of trial, demonstrating its role as divine comfort and spiritual strength. The term has become emblematic in Islamic theology of the peace that surpasses understanding, granted to those who trust in Allah.
“Their prophet said to them, 'Indeed, the sign of his kingship is that there will come to you the Ark wherein is tranquility (sakinah) from your Lord and remnants left by the family of Moses and the family of Aaron, carried by the angels. Indeed in that is a sign for you, if you are believers.'”
“Then Allah sent down His tranquility (sakinah) upon His Messenger and upon the believers...”
“It is He who sent down tranquility into the hearts of the believers that they would increase in faith along with their faith...”
The number 2 in Arabic numerology signifies duality, balance, partnership, and harmony. It represents cooperation, sensitivity, and the peaceful mediation between opposing forces—qualities perfectly aligned with the essence of Sakinah.
