Qabaayla (قَبَايلة) is the plural form of qabila (قَبِيلة), derived from the Arabic root Q-B-L (ق-ب-ل). The name literally means 'tribes' or 'clans' and refers to organized groups of people united by blood relations, ancestry, or kinship. In classical Arabic, this term was used to denote the tribal structures of pre-Islamic and Islamic Arabia. The suffix -a in qabaayla serves to group multiple instances of the singular form, emphasizing collective identity.

The root Q-B-L and its derivatives appear multiple times in the Quran in reference to tribes and groups of people. While Qabaayla specifically as a name form is less commonly used in the Quran, the concept of qabail (tribes) is deeply embedded in Quranic discourse regarding the organization of Arab society, genealogy, and communal structures. The Quran frequently references the tribal divisions of Arabia and emphasizes unity beyond tribal boundaries in the Islamic community (ummah).
